Chapter 11: Zachary

So much was going on in my head. I was still trying to make sense of that weird premonition from last night about Grams and her children and their past. Phoebe was a Vampire now. My best friend was one of them. What were we going to do? It's not like it's a secret we could keep forever. People were going to notice she isn't aging, or going out during the daytime.

But even more than that, her family are Vampire Hunters. It's not like we could show up, "hey I know this is a little weird, but Your Daughter is a Vampire now and it would be freaking sweet if you didn't try to kill her!". That doesn't exactly roll off the tongue easily.

I began walking out of the garage towards the main house to see if Grams could help me sort things out. The past hours have been a little difficult to process alone. As I made my way up the cobblestone pathway I slowed my steps as I heard a car pulling up.
Grams never had visitors and I wasn't expecting anyone. I looked as the blue Viper hummed up casually until it came to a halt in front of the porch. I stepped in between the car and the front steps with my arms crossed and back up against one of the columns. Witches were a bit territorial and this was my land! The blue car's trunk popped open.

"Hey Loser, make yourself useful!" I heard Anna say.

"Anna?!" I called out in disbelief. My sister? She was home.

Grams finally let Anna out of her bear hug like old and smiled widely. Anna hasn't been home in almost three years and now she was home, so Grams was quite happy. She wiped her joyful tears from her eyes and looked Anna up and down.

She had changed a lot. Her soft brown hair had been cut off to this short spiky chick-hawk thing and dyed black with some purple intertwined in it, making her bright blue eyes pop even more. It was weird, all of us McHale's had bronze brownish skin with the brightest eyes. I'm pretty sure Witchcraft was behind it.

She wore dark denim jeans and a matching denim jacket, underneath was a sheer black shirt and her purple bra was visible underneath it. She wore silver bangles on her wrists and black cowboy boots. The only thing that stood out was her necklace.

In the center of her chest was a dark purple agate amulet carved into what looked like a real human heart. I was drawn to it on a way. I couldn't help but stare into the dark abyss. Anna noticed my stares and pulled her jacket over a little to cover it.

"I found it in an occult shop out in Ipswich" Anna defended. "Only costs me a few cents."

"Ipswich?" Grams asked, "What were you doing in Ipswich? What happened to school?"

"I dropped out two years ago." Anna announced. I almost dropped my jaw. I half expected Grams to backhand Anna, or send her into another dimension like she did to us when we were kids, but she didn't.

"What?" she asked. Anna nodded.

"I set out to find my way…and school wasn't where I was going to find myself" Anna said. She straightened out her jacket and swallowed, probably expecting Grams to smack her as well. "I started traveling, met a few interesting people. Ran into some old friends." She then stopped and turned to me.

"Renee' says 'Hello'…" she said. I swallowed hard. Renee. I hadn't thought about her in almost a year. "I saw her a few months ago after running into a pack of wolves."
"Werewolves?" Grams asked. Anna nodded and continued.

"White Wolves…" she stated. "They were gathering up in the mountains and enclosing on a town. Renee' and a few of her Underworld friends stopped them."

While Grams and Anna talked some more, I left the house and began walking through the garden towards my section of the property. The garden sort of soothed me during troubling times. So much was happening within the past few hours. Phoebe died, Vampires swarmed the front yard, Anna came home and now I was thinking about my ex-girlfriend. I grabbed my cell phone, but as soon as I got to Renee's contact information my phone flew out of my hands

"You shouldn't do that…" Anna said.

My phone flew through the air and ended up in Anna's hand. She walked over to me and grimaced. Anna was different now, more so than the last time I saw her. Growing up, Anna wasn't a powerful Witch. She had little to no magic. Her only real source of power was her Visions. Anna was quite the Psychic, but other parts of the Craft, I was always superior.

"I don't appreciate you using your newfound powers on me!" I said and snatched my phone out of Anna's hand.

"Don't get defensive little bro" Anna smirked. She shrugged her shoulders and looped around me. "I was just making sure you weren't about to do something you'll regret later. I mean honestly, do you really want to call Renee' here after what happened last time?"

"No" I said and turned away. Last time I saw Renee' a lot of people died, mostly Witches. She was a loose cannon, it'd be like opening the Lion's den calling Renee' here and Grams had her own issues with her as well. Personal issues.

"Grams filled me in on Phoebe." Anna then said. I looked up. She looked a little amused by the situation, but caring at the same time. It was so bizarre. "How are you doing?"

"I saw my best friend die right before my eyes" I said and looked away. "I tried using magic to bring her back, but it didn't work…and now she-"

"The spirits don't like when Witches meddle in the forces of nature… your magic was muted because they didn't want you to save her" Anna said.

"But Grams even tried… we did a spell together and then-"

"If Grams really wanted to save Phoebe, she would have been saved." Anna then said coldly. "She is a Warren Witch and one of the most powerful sorceresses of all time. She chose to let her die."

I took a step back and blinked oddly at her. What was she saying? Grams loved Phoebe she would never let her die. The spell didn't work I felt it.

"That is a lie" I straight out said. I took a step back and shook my head.

"So loyal…so blind" Anna then started, "Tell me, if you trust her word so much why don't you ask her why she keeps Grandpa in that coma? Ask her how she has so much power and why she doesn't do the good things she preached to us growing up. Ask her about her other children, and what happened to them. Why it happened to them… does she even talk about Aunt Tracy?"

I stiffened and made a fist. Cold wind started to blow and the clouds up above were growing dark. Anna was really pissing me off. I began conjuring a storm. Normally I didn't use magic in a fight, but Anna is a Watch after all and she could really use a beating.

"Alright fine" she said raising her arms up in defeat. "I'll back off…" she said. I released my fists and the storm up above.

"Anna!?" I heard Phoebe call out from by bedroom window. "Is that you?!" Anna and I both looked up to see Phoebe hidden from the sun with my curtains. Anna waved her hand to Phoebe.

"Hey Phoebe, yeah it's me!" Anna responded. "Hey listen, we'll catch up later! Zack and I have to run into town! We'll be back a little later!" she then turned to me. "I'll drive, we have a lot to talk about…" Anna said and began walking towards the front of the house. Reluctantly I followed her.
